October 31, 2004 (Sunday):
29th running of the
Marine Corps Marathon. I ran my only Marine Corps Marathon in 1982, at age 44 and with
herniated L4 and L5 disks.
I finished!
And was still able to walk to the Pentagon parking!
Congratulations to Mike Hagee, 33rd Commandant of the Marine Corps.
I met Major Mike Hagee back in 1982 when he came to Headquarters, USMC,
to head the Officer Plans Section.
I worked with him through 1986 until he became the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1, 2MarDiv.
Those of us who worked with him knew that he would make general. But I don't think any
of us envisioned his becoming Commandant.
A different kind of
Leatherneck institution. And you thought all
Leathernecks were Marines, didn't you?
